During stress, we often turn to unhealthy coping strategies. The part of our brain that keeps us in ‘fight/flight’ is running the show. We are under the control of a very primitive aspect of ourselves that ‘gives in’ to behaviours we know aren’t good for us, but give us a release. In fact, that release is a hormone called dopamine. We crave this feeling, but not in a pleasurable way. It is more like being slave to desires that once we attain them, make us feel unfulfilled or bad about ourselves. You know, eating, spending, using substances, watching hours of Netflix. There are many things we can do to start to cope with the stress in a more healthful way, it takes making a choice and taking the first step!
